Client Advocacy & Wrap-Around Support

As clients face complex legal and emotional challenges, they can rely on our Client Advocates, who walk alongside them every step, offering safety planning, emotional support during legal meetings, and guidance in navigating vital resources. Whether connecting someone with a social worker, helping replace an ID, or facilitating access to mental health services, our advocates ensure that no one has to navigate this journey alone.

By integrating legal representation with holistic, trauma-informed support, we help survivors not only escape violence but also build a foundation for long-term safety and independence.

Our Client Advocates assist with:

  • Safety planning and referrals to crisis response resources.
  • Referrals to the Crime Victims Compensation program (CVCP) for medical reimbursement related to a crime, relocation expenses after a Protection Order is granted, security systems, and lock changes.
  • Referrals to mental health resources and other healthcare resources related to gender-based violence.
  • Referrals to financial resources if expenses are associated with domestic violence or family law issues, as well as referrals to job banks and job readiness programs.
  • Relocation and housing advocacy, including letters to landlords, assistance with Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) paperwork to break a lease, advocacy to DC social services agencies, and connections with rental and moving assistance.
  • Referrals to other legal services if clients have legal needs beyond the scope of Volunteer Legal Advocates’ services.

“Everyone deserves access to the community resources designed to help them heal and thrive. Too often, our clients are entitled to services they don’t even know exist. I find real purpose in connecting them with the support they need to reclaim their autonomy and rebuild their lives.”
“There are so many people and organizations in this region offering crucial supportive services, and every person deserves to have their emotional and physical needs met. I am so grateful for the opportunity to make these connections.”
