Celebrating Our Volunteers: November Highlights
This November, our committed volunteer attorneys gave their time, knowledge, and heartfelt support to assist survivors and children across DC and Montgomery County, MD. Their compassion, advocacy, and steadfast commitment have a profound impact on the people we serve and the broader community. We are deeply appreciative of their partnership as we work together to ensure justice for every survivor and their families.

NOVEMBER KUDOS
Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence
- Nicole Banton (Hogan Lovells LLP) – Provided compassionate and effective representation of her domestic violence survivor client. Nicole was fully prepared to litigate the Civil Protection Order case at a contested trial, but her work led to the Respondent consenting to a 2-year Civil Protection Order, saving our client the trauma of testifying.
- George Marcou (JMIN Intellectual Property Counsel) – Offered assistance to a domestic violence survivor client in her Civil Protection Order case.
- Katherine St. Romain, Meredith Johnson, Jonathan Picado, and Robert Starling (Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP) – Zealously represented their client’s interests, and successfully argued to trail a related felony case, despite the Judge’s initial refusal. Without their assistance, their client almost certainly would not have obtained the protection she needs, and she may have been forced to testify before the related felony trial.
- Kassidy Schmitz and Steven Barringer (Greenberg and Traurig LLP) – Zealously represented a domestic violence survivor client, resulting in the entry of a 2-year Civil Protection Order.
Advocating for Children
- Lauren Ellison (McDermott Will & Schulte LLP) – Her hard work, diligence, and advocacy in a motion to terminate visits and related expedited hearing ensured her child-client is protected from continued exposure to a child-sex offender.
- Anna Perina (Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy LLP) and Hedda Garland – Supported both their minor clients in the appointed custody case and also served as advocates for them in a related criminal case, which ultimately helped achieve a consent custody order awarding sole legal and physical custody to the children’s aunt, which is in their best interest.
- Jennifer Ferrigno and Natalie Cappuzzo (Latham & Watkins LLP) – Provided dedicated and thoughtful representation of their minor child client, ultimately negotiating a settlement in the child’s best interest.
- Phil Reens and Serena Seaman (Clifford Chance LLP) – Obtained a summary judgment order that allows their 5-year-old client to remain in a safe and stable home where she is thriving.
- April Cockerham (Price Benowitz LLP) and Kit Wheatley – Zealously represented their child client, resulting in a Consent Permanent Custody Order that reflects the child’s best interest and also provides a hopeful path forward for the family.
- Clirae Bourke (Reed Smith LLP) and Abigal McDonough (Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP) – Provided excellent and thorough representation of their fifteen-year-old client, which led to a consent agreement that is in his best interest and will ensure he attends school more regularly.
Fighting for Immigrant Rights
- Hassan Elsouri (Elsouri Law & Consultants, PLLC) – Did a great job being meticulous with his efforts to advocate for the client. The Request for Evidence response letter was detailed and excellent.
Pursuing Justice in the Courtroom
- Shari Boscolo – Was able to negotiate an excellent resolution for her client.
- Andrew Magloughlin (Steptoe LLP) – Provided dedicated advocacy on behalf of his domestic violence survivor client in the appeal of her Civil Protection Order extension case.
- Jonathan Trebble-Greening, Katherine St. Romain, Elizabeth Kalanchoe and Mindy Johnson (Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP) – Zealously represented a domestic violence survivor client in trial.
Going Above & Beyond
- Erin Schnappauf (Baker Botts LLP) – Worked tirelessly on a Civil Protection Order for over 8 months, navigating jurisdictional issues and the complications of a Respondent incarcerated out of state to provide her client with the best possible support.
