Meet DC Arsht Fellow Kaylyn Chatman
Join us in welcoming Kaylyn Chatman as Volunteer Legal Advocates’ DC Roxana Cannon Arsht Fellow* as she joins our Child Advocacy Program team. Kaylyn recently completed law school after a decade in law enforcement and receiving a master’s degree in human services counseling. We spoke with Kaylyn about how her background in public service and unique perspective led her to the Arsht Fellowship, and what she’s looking forward to in this role.
Tell us about your career journey and what led you to seek out the Roxana Cannon Arsht Fellowship.
Public service has always been at the center of my career. I spent ten years in law enforcement, where I worked closely with communities and often encountered individuals and families facing complex challenges that extended far beyond the moment of a police call. Over time, I became increasingly interested in how legal advocacy could help address the underlying issues people were experiencing. That interest ultimately led me to law school. When I learned about the Roxana Cannon Arsht Fellowship, it immediately stood out because it combines legal advocacy with direct service to the community. The opportunity to support children and families through the Child Advocacy Program felt like a natural continuation of my commitment to public service, but in a new and meaningful way.
What inspired you to pursue a legal career after nearly a decade in law enforcement, and how did that transition shape your perspective on justice and advocacy?
My experience in law enforcement gave me a unique perspective on how the justice system functions and how deeply it affects people’s lives. I often encountered situations where families were struggling with legal issues but did not have the resources or guidance they needed to navigate the system. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a legal career so I could help people earlier in the process and advocate for solutions that support long-term stability. Having worked on the enforcement side of the justice system has shaped the way I approach advocacy today. It reminds me that behind every case is a person or family trying to move forward, and that thoughtful legal support can make a meaningful difference.
How have your past experiences and your master’s in human services counseling informed the way you support clients today?
My master’s in human services counseling helped me develop a deeper understanding of the emotional and social factors that people may be navigating when they seek legal help. It emphasized the importance of empathy, active listening, and meeting people where they are. Together with my background in law enforcement, those experiences have shaped how I interact with clients. I try to approach each situation with patience and understanding, recognizing that legal challenges are often just one part of a larger story. My goal is always to make sure clients feel supported and empowered throughout the process.
As an Arsht Fellow working primarily with our Child Advocacy Program team, what excites you most about advocating for children and families through the legal system? What impact are you hoping to make for your clients and the broader community?
What excites me most about working with the Child Advocacy Program is the opportunity to advocate for children and families at moments when support can make a lasting impact. Access to legal guidance can help families navigate difficult circumstances and create more stable outcomes for children. I hope to contribute by helping families better understand their rights and by supporting outcomes that prioritize the safety, well-being, and future opportunities of the children we serve. I’m also excited to work alongside such a dedicated team that is deeply committed to strengthening families and supporting the broader community.
How do you like to spend time outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and finding ways to recharge and stay active. I also enjoy attending professional events and conferences related to law and technology, particularly those focused on privacy and emerging issues in technology law. I’m always interested in learning and connecting with others who are working in areas that intersect with law, policy, and innovation. When I’m not working or attending professional events, I enjoy exploring new restaurants, traveling when I can, and spending time near the water. After spending years working in fast-paced environments, I’ve learned that taking time to slow down and enjoy those moments helps me stay grounded and energized for the work that I do.
