Child Advocacy (Guardians ad Litem)

Volunteer Legal Advocates has served as court-appointed Guardians ad litem for children living in dangerous, high-conflict environments for over a decade. These children—ranging in age from newborns to teenagers—are often caught in the middle of custody disputes involving domestic violence, abuse, or neglect. Most live in DC’s Wards 5, 7, and 8 and have already experienced profound trauma.

Our attorneys act as the child’s independent legal voice, focused solely on their best interests. Each case involves a thorough investigation, during which we speak with parents, caregivers, teachers, counselors, medical providers, and others involved in the child’s life. We review school and medical records, CPS files, and police reports. We attend all court hearings and provide the judge with detailed recommendations on custody and visitation, always prioritizing the child’s safety and stability.

Our goal is simple and urgent: to ensure every child we represent ends up in a safe, permanent, and loving home. With each case, our attorneys protect a child’s immediate well-being and help change the trajectory of a young life.

Frequently Asked Questions

While our Child Advocacy Program only takes cases assigned by the Court, Volunteer Legal Advocates also supports survivors of domestic abuse and their children through our Domestic Violence Program. We provide free, trauma-informed legal representation to survivors of domestic violence and other forms of gender-based abuse, and assist with Protection Orders, custody, and divorce. We also offer holistic support through our Client Advocates, who provide safety planning, emotional support, and connections to trusted community partners, helping survivors move from crisis to control.

Our trauma-informed attorneys provide free representation to survivors of domestic abuse or gender-based violence in Protection Order cases and family law matters, including custody and divorce. We also support clients in asserting their legal rights in criminal proceedings against perpetrators of abuse.
